Chew Stoke is a small rural parish in Bath and North East Somerset, set on the banks of the River Chew in the open landscape of the Chew Valley, a short distance east of Chew Valley Lake and beneath the slopes of the Mendip Hills. The village has a long history reflected in its medieval parish church and a mix of listed houses, farms and thatched cottages clustered along lanes and the river; its origins are recorded in early documents and the surrounding landscape bears the traces of centuries of agriculture and quarrying on local limestone and sandstone.
Today Chew Stoke combines a countryside economy - dairy and arable farming - with a strong community spirit and some commuter links into Bristol and Bath. The proximity of Chew Valley Lake and the Mendips makes it attractive for birdwatching, walking and rural tourism, while village amenities, a hall and annual events keep social life lively for residents.
