Bath and North East Somerset covers the city of Bath and a wide surrounding area of river valleys, rolling countryside and limestone hills, sitting between the Cotswolds to the east and the Mendip Hills to the south. The landscape is punctuated by the River Avon, the Kennet and Avon Canal and the shallow lakes of the Chew Valley, giving a mix of urban terraces, commuter villages and agricultural land.
The city of Bath is the cultural and historic heart, famous for its Roman Baths, Georgian crescents and citywide World Heritage status, and it still attracts festivals, independent shops and a lively arts scene. The area has strong literary and architectural associations, from Jane Austen to Palladian and Georgian architects, and historic churches such as Bath Abbey form part of a compact, walkable centre.
Economically the unitary authority relies on tourism, education and professional services, bolstered by institutions such as the University of Bath and Bath Spa University, with growing creative and tech sectors. There are also contrasts between affluent suburbs and former industrial communities around Keynsham, Midsomer Norton and Radstock, and strong commuter links into Bristol by rail and road, which shape local housing and employment patterns.
