Greyfriars is an inner ward of Bedford whose name recalls the medieval Franciscan friary that once stood in the area. It sits within walking distance of Bedford town centre and the River Great Ouse, and is characterised by a compact mix of Victorian terraces, later suburban housing and some more recent developments close to the riverside and shopping areas.
The ward has a culturally diverse population and a local economy built around small shops, services and light industry rather than large employers, so community groups and regeneration projects play a visible role in local life. Historic echoes, riverside amenity and the pressures of town-centre living - housing demand, traffic and redevelopment - combine to give the area a lively, changing character.
