The ward of Thamesmead East sits in the northern corner of the London Borough of Bexley in England, built on reclaimed marshland beside the River Thames. It is part of the late-1960s planned town of Thamesmead, notable for its network of lakes and canals - most prominently Southmere Lake - and a distinctive modernist, sometimes brutalist, layout of walkways and housing.
Today the area is largely residential and socially mixed, with ongoing regeneration schemes aiming to deliver new homes, jobs and improved facilities; better connections via nearby Abbey Wood and the Elizabeth line have helped link it to central London. Nearby industrial heritage such as Crossness Pumping Station, active community arts projects and occasional use as a film location add cultural interest to the evolving local economy and streetscape.
