Hulton is a ward within the Metropolitan Borough of Bolton in Greater Manchester, sitting on the north‑western fringe of the urban area where suburban streets give way to pockets of green belt and farmland. The area has good road links - the M61 and local A‑roads make it an easy commute into Bolton and towards Wigan and Manchester - and contains a mix of older terraces, council housing and more recent developments, plus small local centres and community facilities serving neighbourhoods such as Over Hulton and parts of Westhoughton.
Historically the ward bears strong industrial and landed echoes: the local Hulton family once owned a large estate and Hulton Park, and the nineteenth century coal and textile industries helped shape the pattern of housing and settlement. Today there’s a balance between that working‑class heritage and a quieter, semi‑rural character, with former colliery sites, estate landscapes and conservation‑minded green spaces providing local interest alongside everyday economic life and community groups.
