Westhoughton is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Bolton, in Greater Manchester, England, historically part of Lancashire. It sits roughly between Bolton and Wigan, close to Horwich and Blackrod, and lies on the edge of the West Pennine Moors, so it combines a commuter‑town feel with easy access to surrounding countryside.
Once dominated by coal mining and textile work - notably the 1910 Pretoria Pit disaster - the town has a strong local identity with Victorian buildings such as St Bartholomew's Church, pubs, clubs and community events. Good rail and road links into Manchester and Bolton have helped its shift towards a more residential, commuter economy while pockets of green space and moorland remain close by.
