Atherton North is the northern ward of the town of Atherton in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, part of Greater Manchester. It lies on the edge of the local urban area between Wigan and Manchester, characterised by a mix of Victorian terraces from its industrial past and later suburban housing, with a scattering of small parks and community green spaces.
Historically the area grew up around coal mining and textile working, and that industrial heritage still marks the streets and community identity. Today the ward is largely residential, supported by local shops, schools and community groups, with rail and road links into nearby towns and ongoing local regeneration efforts aimed at improving housing, the high street and public spaces.
