Moulsecoomb & Bevendean is an electoral ward on the north‑eastern fringe of Brighton and Hove, sitting where suburban housing meets the open chalk slopes of the South Downs. The area includes the post‑war council estates of Moulsecoomb with its small local centre and railway station, and the more semi‑rural valley and downland of Bevendean, which still has allotments, patches of farmland and good walking on the urban fringe.
Socially and economically the ward is mixed: a sizeable student and commuter presence linked to the nearby University of Brighton and transport routes contrasts with long‑standing local communities, pockets of deprivation and many active neighbourhood groups and local projects aimed at regeneration, green space stewardship and community facilities. Historically it grew from scattered hamlets and farmland into council housing in the 20th century, giving the place a layered character of suburbia, community activism and countryside access.
