Scapegoat Hill is a small village in the metropolitan borough of Kirklees, in West Yorkshire, sitting on the lower slopes of the Pennines above the Holme Valley a few miles west of Huddersfield. Its elevated position gives open views across moorland and the valley, and the settlement is characterised by stone-built houses and the remnants of 19th-century mill architecture.
Like many Pennine communities, Scapegoat Hill grew with the 19th-century woollen and textile trade, and traces of that industrial past survive in converted buildings and local chapels. The village’s colourful name has attracted folklore and debate over its origins; today it is mainly residential, home to commuters and walkers, with a strong sense of local identity and small-scale economic activity rather than heavy industry.
