Hemingford Grey is a small riverside village in historic Huntingdonshire, within the modern county of Cambridgeshire in England, sitting on the north bank of the River Great Ouse opposite Hemingford Abbots and close to St Ives and Huntingdon. Its setting on the river and neighbouring floodplain gives the village a tranquil, green character with popular riverside walks and traditional meadowland that contrast with the nearby urban centres.
The village is best known for its ancient manor house, celebrated as the inspiration and setting for Lucy Boston’s Green Knowe books, and the street scene of period cottages and timber-framed buildings gives a strong historic feel. Today Hemingford Grey is largely residential with some agriculture around it; local community life centres on the church, village amenities and seasonal events, while many residents commute to Cambridge or London for work.
