Saughall is a small village and former civil parish in the unitary authority of Cheshire West and Chester, situated a few miles north‑west of Chester and close to the England–Wales border and the salt marshes of the Dee Estuary. The setting is characteristically rural Cheshire: low‑lying farmland, pockets of willow and hedgerow, and good views across fields towards the estuary, which makes it popular with walkers and birdwatchers as well as people commuting into nearby towns and cities.
Historically the settlement has medieval roots and its name reflects the sallow willows that once grew locally. Today Saughall retains a village feel with a parish church, village hall, primary school and a few local pubs and shops; the economy is a mix of agriculture, local services and commuters working in Chester or on the nearby Deeside and Wirral employment areas. Community events and volunteer groups help keep a strong social life despite the village’s modest size.
