Coleman Street is one of the 25 wards of the City of London, sitting in the north‑west of the Square Mile close to the Barbican, Moorgate and Cripplegate areas. It has the familiar City mix of narrow, medieval lanes and alleys alongside modern glass and stone office blocks, so the daytime population is dominated by finance and professional services while only a small residential community remains.
The ward’s name recalls medieval coalmen or charcoal sellers and the area contains a number of historic church sites, including the old parish of St Stephen Coleman Street, as well as pockets of older architecture near the Guildhall. Politically it participates in the unique governance of the Square Mile, electing an alderman and common councillors to the City of London Corporation, and retains strong links to City institutions and livery activity.
