Cripplegate is a compact ward in the north of the City of London, taking its name from one of the old gates in the Roman London Wall. The area was heavily rebuilt in the mid‑20th century and is dominated by the post‑war Barbican estate and the cultural hub of the Barbican Centre, while pockets of older fabric survive, notably the medieval church of St Giles-without-Cripplegate, where John Milton is buried.
Geographically it sits where the city meets the old open ground of Moorfields, and the ward combines a surprisingly dense residential community with close links to the Square Mile’s financial life and to civic institutions such as the Guildhall. The result is a lively mix of Brutalist architecture, quiet courtyards, arts activity and the layers of Roman, medieval and modern London visible in a short walk.
