City of London

London borough in England

Coordinates:51.52, -0.09
OS grid ref:TQ 32 81

The City of London sits at the heart of London along the north bank of the River Thames, covering roughly a square mile - often called the Square Mile. It’s Britain’s pre-eminent financial centre, home to institutions such as the Bank of England and the London Stock Exchange, with a small resident population (around 8–10,000) and a daytime workforce of several hundred thousand. The skyline mixes historic landmarks like St Paul's Cathedral and the Guildhall with modern towers, while cultural venues such as the Barbican Centre provide arts and residential life amid the offices.

Historically the core of Roman and medieval London, the area was reshaped after the Great Fire of 1666 and retains many ancient institutions - the unique City of London Corporation, livery companies and the annual Lord Mayor’s Show give it a civic identity distinct from the surrounding boroughs. That blend of deep history, ceremonial tradition and intense global commerce makes it a compact but singular part of the capital.
