Walbrook is a compact ward in the heart of the City of London, sitting in the hollow of the long‑buried tributary that gave it its name. The sunken line of the old Walbrook river still shapes streets and basement archaeology here; Roman Londinium remains have been discovered beneath office blocks and famously beneath St Stephen Walbrook, the Christopher Wren church whose simple, domed interior and Henry Moore altar attract both worshippers and visitors.
Today the ward is dominated by the City’s financial character, with major institutions and modern glass offices rubbing shoulders with historic sites around Bank, the Bank of England and Mansion House. It has a very small resident community and a large daytime population of workers, and still plays a civic role within City governance as one of its traditional wards, mixing dense commercial activity with surprising pockets of archaeology and parish life.
