Hayle sits at the mouth of the River Hayle on the east side of St Ives Bay in Cornwall, England. Its broad estuary and adjacent sand dunes at places such as Gwithian Towans are important for wildlife and birdlife, while the long beaches and surf breaks beneath Godrevy make the area popular with walkers and surfers alike.
Historically Hayle was an industrial port and engineering centre tied to Cornish copper and tin, with 18th–19th century foundries and smelting shaping much of the town’s built character. After industrial decline the harbour area has seen regeneration and a growing creative and tourism economy, so the town now mixes visible industrial heritage with a lively local community and seasonal visitor trade not far from places like St Ives.
