Nanpean is a small village in mid-Cornwall in southwest England, set in the heart of the county’s china‑clay country a few miles to the north‑east of St Austell. It developed during the 19th and early 20th centuries around the extraction and processing of china clay, and the landscape still carries the distinctive white tips, works and industrial remnants of that era.
The community retains a strong Cornish identity and practical, working‑class roots, with local reclamation and walking routes around former workings and several industrial‑heritage sites nearby such as Wheal Martyn; the visitor attractions of the wider St Austell area, including the Eden Project, are within easy reach. Today Nanpean is a quiet village with a close‑knit feel, balancing its mining past with small‑scale local enterprise and tourism influences.
