Padstow sits on the western side of the Camel Estuary in north Cornwall, England, with a small tidal harbour and narrow quay serving fishing boats, leisure craft and seasonal ferries to Rock and the sandy shore of Daymer Bay. The estuary’s tides create dramatic mudflats at low water and busy waters at high tide, making the area popular for sailing, birdwatching and coastal walks.
Historically a medieval port built around pilchard fishing and coastal trade, Padstow retains cobbled streets, a maritime character and a lively waterfront of galleries and seafood restaurants; its contemporary profile has been raised by chef Rick Stein, while traditional culture is visible in the boisterous May Day 'Obby 'Oss' celebrations. Tourism now underpins much of the local economy alongside fishing, and there are ongoing conservation and heritage efforts that reflect the town’s long ties with the sea.
