Wadebridge sits on the banks of the River Camel in north Cornwall and began life as a river crossing where a ford and later a bridge linked the two sides. Its winding streets, riverside walks and proximity to the tidal estuary give it a strong sense of place, with attractive countryside and mudflats popular with birdwatchers and outdoor visitors.
The town grew as a local market and trading centre and later as the rail terminus whose disused line is now the popular Camel Trail, a traffic-free route to Padstow and Bodmin much used by cyclists and families. Today the economy mixes agriculture, independent shops, cafes and tourism, and the nearby Royal Cornwall Showground and active community campaigns on local issues give the town a lively social and civic life.
