Bigrigg is a small former mining village in the historic county of Cumberland (now part of Cumbria) in West Cumbria, lying inland from the Irish Sea and close to towns such as Egremont and Whitehaven. It sits on the edge of the low coastal plain with views across rolling farmed countryside to the Lakeland fells, so its setting combines moorland and agricultural landscape rather than being deep in the mountains.
Historically the village grew up around 19th‑century iron ore and related mining and industrial activity, and traces of that industrial archaeology and terraced miners’ housing remain visible. Today Bigrigg is largely a quiet, residential and farming community with many residents commuting to larger towns; local identity is still shaped by its mining past and small‑scale village life rather than by tourism, although its proximity to the coast and the Lake District makes it handy for visitors exploring West Cumbria.
