Cleator Moor West sits on the western side of the small former mining town of Cleator Moor in Cumberland, on the fringe of the Cumbrian fells. The ward occupies a compact, valley-side area characterised by terraced streets and pockets of green space, with the skyline giving way to the moorland and uplands that lead towards the Lake District and Ennerdale.
Historically the neighbourhood grew up around 19th-century haematite mining and associated ironworks, and that industrial legacy still shapes local architecture and community memory. Since the mines closed the local economy has diversified into light industry, services and commuting to nearby employment centres such as Whitehaven and the nuclear site at Sellafield, while strong local clubs, churches and neighbourhood groups keep a distinct social identity and support modest regeneration efforts.
