Egremont in Cumberland, England is a small market town on the western fringe of the Lake District, sitting beside the River Ehen and a few miles from the Cumbrian coast and towns such as Whitehaven. The town grew up around the Norman motte-and-bailey Egremont Castle, whose ruined keep still overlooks the centre, and its economy has long been shaped by local mining and later by employment at nearby industrial and nuclear sites like Sellafield.
Culturally Egremont is best known for the annual Crab Fair, a tradition dating back to 1267 that features quirky customs such as gurning (grimacing) contests; the town retains a strong community spirit, independent shops and market activity, and provides easy access to walking and outdoor pursuits in the surrounding fells.
