Cleator Moor sits in the historic county of Cumberland in northwest England, on the industrial fringe of West Cumbria. The town occupies moorland above the valley of the River Ehen, with views towards the Lake District fells and easy access to the Irish Sea coast and nearby towns such as Whitehaven and Egremont.
Cleator Moor grew rapidly in the 19th century thanks to iron ore mining, foundries and railway links, and the legacy of that industrial boom and later decline still shapes the local economy and landscape. Today the community balances that mining heritage with regeneration efforts, local clubs and volunteer projects, and a strong sense of local identity as it adapts to a more mixed, service- and tourism-oriented economy.
