Burgh by Sands is a small rural parish in Cumberland, in north‑west England, sitting on the coastal plain beside the Solway Firth a few miles west of Carlisle. It lies close to the western end of Hadrian's Wall and the site of the Roman fort commonly linked with Aballava; the parish church, St Michael's Church, is notable because King Edward I died nearby and was buried there in 1307, giving the village an unexpected medieval claim to fame.
The surrounding landscape of salt marsh and tidal flats is important for birdlife, and the local economy remains largely agricultural with sheep and dairy farming, alongside a modest trickle of visitors - walkers following Roman frontier routes and birdwatchers drawn to the coast. Social life is quietly village‑centred, with a strong community feel around the church, village hall and local amenities, and a sense of continuity from its Roman and borderland past into the present.
