Buttermere is a small, close-knit parish nestling in Cumberland in the heart of the Lake District National Park, set between the mirror-like lakes of Buttermere and Crummock Water. The valley is a classic glacial trough with steeper fells rising sharply from the shore - notably Haystacks, High Stile, Robinson, Fleetwith Pike and Rannerdale Knotts - making it a magnet for walkers, photographers and anyone after dramatic mountain-and-lake scenery.
Historically the local economy revolved around sheep farming and smallholdings; today tourism and hospitality help sustain the community alongside traditional farming. The area has strong cultural associations with artists and writers of the Romantic and outdoor traditions and with fell-walking heritage - Haystacks in particular is famous among enthusiasts as Alfred Wainwright’s favourite summit, where his ashes were scattered. Conservation and seasonal visitor pressures shape daily life in the parish, which retains a quiet, largely rural character outside the busy summer months.
