Borrowdale sits in the heart of the Lake District in historic Cumberland, a classic glacial valley running down to Derwentwater and the town of Keswick. The floor of the valley is carved by the River Derwent and dotted with tarns such as Watendlath, while steep fells, crags and passes like the Honister Pass give the area its dramatic scenery.
Long settled since Norse and medieval times, the area has a history of slate working around Honister and traditional hill farming; today tourism - walking, climbing and fell running - dominates the local economy. Small communities such as Rosthwaite and Seatoller remain close-knit, with a strong emphasis on conservation and outdoor culture alongside seasonal visitor services.
