Above Derwent sits on the western side of the Derwentwater catchment in historic Cumberland, largely within the Lake District National Park. The parish is characterised by classic Lakeland scenery - wooded valleys, pasture and rising fells draining to the River Derwent and nearby Bassenthwaite Lake - and it lies only a few miles from the market town of Keswick, so it serves as a quiet rural neighbour to one of the area’s main visitor hubs.
Locally the economy and social life revolve around hill farming, holiday accommodation and outdoor recreation, with a steady flow of walkers and nature lovers using the network of paths and bridleways. There are long-standing rural traditions and a strong community spirit, visible in village halls and conservation efforts, and the area’s history is embedded in its field patterns, traditional stone buildings and small-scale quarrying and farming heritage.
