Lorton is a small rural parish in historic Cumberland, tucked into the north-western corner of the Lake District National Park. It consists mainly of the two villages, High Lorton and Low Lorton, lying in the valley of the River Cocker close to Crummock Water and Buttermere, with surrounding fells that attract walkers and fell-runners.
Traditionally agricultural, the parish still shows many stone farmhouses and field patterns but now relies heavily on tourism, holiday accommodation and outdoor recreation alongside farming. There is a modest but active community centred on the village hall and church, and the area’s history is visible in its old buildings, lanes and former packhorse routes that once linked farms, quarries and local markets.
