Maryport

Maryport, in historic Cumberland on the north‑west coast of England, sits on the edge of the Solway Firth and offers broad views toward the Irish Sea and the western fringe of the Lake District. It’s a compact harbour town whose long shoreline and coastal walking routes make it a quiet gateway for visitors heading into the fells as well as a working coastal community in its own right.

The town was laid out as a planned port in the 18th century and took its name from the Senhouse family who developed it; beneath the later Georgian streets lie remains of the Roman fort Alauna, celebrated locally in the Senhouse Roman Museum. Maryport’s history of coal, shipbuilding and fishing shapes its austere harbourfront, and in recent years the town has focused on community‑led regeneration, maritime events and modest cultural tourism alongside everyday coastal life.
