Dearham sits in the historic county of Cumberland (now administratively in Cumbria), a small village just inland from the Solway coast and a short drive from Maryport and Workington. It feels semi-rural, with a mixture of older cottages and more modern homes, and makes a handy base for coastal walks and excursions into the nearby Lake District and Solway Firth shoreline.
Historically the village expanded in the 19th century as a colliery community, and the legacy of that industrial past is still part of its character even as the local economy has shifted towards commuting, light industry and services. There’s a compact, village-centred social life with a parish church and community activities, and visitors often combine a stop here with the Roman and maritime heritage on the nearby coast.
