Belper sits in the Amber Valley of Derbyshire on the banks of the River Derwent, roughly between Derby and the Peak District. The town is set along a steep-sided valley with attractive riverside walks and long terraces of historic workers' housing that climb the hillside, giving it a distinctive linear character and plenty of local green space close to the town centre.
Belper grew rapidly in the 18th and 19th centuries around the Strutt family’s cotton mills and is part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site; the North Mill and rows of mill cottages remain prominent reminders of its industrial past. Today it has a mixed local economy with independent shops, light industry and many commuters, alongside a lively community scene with food and arts festivals, conservation areas and numerous listed buildings that celebrate both its industrial heritage and contemporary village-like community life.
