Erewash

Erewash is a local authority area in Derbyshire lying roughly between Derby and Nottingham, with the main urban centres at Ilkeston and Long Eaton. The district takes its name from the River Erewash and the landscape is a mix of low-lying river floodplain, canals and urban fringe, giving a distinctly post‑industrial belt character.

Historically the area was strong in coal, lace and textile industries and you can still see former mills and Victorian terraces in the town centres; today the economy is a mix of light manufacturing, distribution and retail with many residents commuting to the nearby cities. The Erewash Canal and local rail links remain important for leisure and connectivity, and regeneration projects have focused on town centre improvements and business parks.

Socially the borough combines market‑town traditions with a practical commuter and working‑class identity, supported by community arts, sports clubs and small museums that celebrate local history.
