Buxton in High Peak, Derbyshire, England is a compact spa town set on the edge of the Peak District, notable for being one of the highest market towns in the country at around 300 metres above sea level. Its dramatic limestone scenery and nearby show caves such as Poole's Cavern give it a strong sense of place, while the thermal spring that feeds St Ann's Well has shaped the town since Roman times.
Culturally and historically the town is best known for its Georgian and Regency architecture, typified by the Buxton Crescent, and its lively arts scene centred on the Buxton Opera House and the annual Buxton Festival and Fringe. The local economy leans heavily on tourism, festivals and independent retail, with plenty of outdoor pursuits and parkland such as the Pavilion Gardens drawing day visitors and walkers to the town.
