Its name literally means "chapel in the forest" and the town has medieval origins with a compact stone-built high street, some Georgian architecture and a long history as a focal point for the surrounding upland communities.

Set on the edge of the Peak District, the town is popular with walkers and day-trippers and sits within easy reach of Buxton and commuting routes towards Manchester. Historically tied to textiles and limestone quarrying, today's economy is a mix of local services, small industry and a commuter population, and the town retains an active community life with markets, local clubs and countryside events.
