Shirland and Stonebroom are neighbouring villages in North East Derbyshire, in the county of Derbyshire, England. They sit on gently rolling farmland on the eastern edge of the county’s historic coalfield, close to the market town of Alfreton and with straightforward commuter links towards Nottingham and Sheffield.
Originally agricultural, the area was transformed in the 19th and early 20th centuries by coal mining and related industries; after pit closures the villages diversified into light industry, local services and commuter living. There’s a strong local community spirit, visible in village halls, sports clubs and conservation projects, and residents enjoy ready access to surrounding countryside and the southern approaches to the Peak District.
