The twin villages of Lynton and Lynmouth sit on the rugged North Devon coast in Devon, England, where steep cliffs tumble to a small harbour at the mouth of the River Lyn. The setting is dramatic: wooded gorges and cascading waterfalls, sweeping views over the Bristol Channel, and the rocky outcrop of the Valley of Rocks nearby, with the South West Coast Path threading the headland for walkers.
Victorian prosperity left a strong mark in the form of period architecture and the famous water-balance Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway that links the two settlements. Historically a small port and fishing community, Lynmouth was devastated by the 1952 flood but both villages now rely largely on tourism - walking, wildlife, galleries, holiday accommodation - and retain a lively local community engaged in conservation and outdoor pursuits.
