Lynton is a small village on the dramatic coast of North Devon in Devon, England, perched on cliffs above its twin village Lynmouth and overlooking the Bristol Channel. The area is famed for the wild, wind-sculpted scenery of Exmoor National Park and nearby rock formations such as the Valley of the Rocks, with the South West Coast Path running close by for walkers seeking coastal views and rugged moorland.
Built up as a Victorian resort, Lynton retains hotels, tearooms and narrow streets of stone cottages that now serve a largely tourism-driven economy, especially for walkers and nature lovers. A distinctive local feature is the Lynton and Lynmouth Cliff Railway, the water-powered funicular linking the two villages, and the community still bears traces of historic events such as the devastating 1952 flood that affected Lynmouth, all of which shape its strong local character and conservation-minded culture.
