Slapton is a small coastal village in the South Hams district of Devon, England, tucked between the freshwater lagoon of Slapton Ley and the long shingle spit of Slapton Sands facing Start Bay. The ley is the largest natural freshwater lake in the south‑west and is a designated SSSI and nature reserve, attracting birdwatchers and naturalists, while the South West Coast Path runs along the beach and cliffs, offering dramatic coastal walks and wildlife viewing.
Historically the area is known for the tragic World War II rehearsals for D‑Day that took place on the sands, with a memorial near Torcross, and that history is still visible in local memory. Today Slapton has a small, mixed economy centred on agriculture, holiday accommodation and seasonal tourism, with a close‑knit village feel, holiday cottages and campsites bringing a regular stream of visitors in summer while conservation and community groups work to protect the ley and its wildlife.
