Stokenham is a compact village and parish in the South Hams district of Devon, England, set between rolling farmland and the salt-swept coastline of Start Bay. The parish looks out over the nature-rich Slapton Ley, a freshwater lagoon with important birdlife, and sits close to the long shingle beach of Slapton Sands, which forms part of the dramatic walking routes of the South West Coast Path.
Historically rural and maritime, the local economy still blends dairy and arable farming with fishing and a steady tourism trade in holiday cottages and nature visits; the area is also marked by wartime memory, as Slapton Sands was the site of the tragic 1944 Exercise Tiger rehearsal. The village retains a strong community feel with a church, pub and local events, and conservation groups and the National Trust help protect the distinctive coastal and ley landscapes.
