Dartmoor Forest is a sparsely populated civil parish in West Devon, Devon, England, occupying a large swathe of high moorland within Dartmoor National Park. The landscape is classic Dartmoor: wide expanses of peat and heather, dramatic granite tors and fast-flowing upland streams, with small settlements and isolated farms clustered around places such as Princetown, Postbridge and Two Bridges.
The parish has a rich historic and cultural feel - prehistoric stone rows, hut circles and old tin‑working remains sit alongside 19th‑century features such as Dartmoor Prison in Princetown. Today the local economy is based on sheep grazing, small‑scale forestry and tourism, with visitors drawn to walking, climbing, historic bridges and peatland conservation; socially it remains a remote, close‑knit community shaped by the rhythms of the moor.
