Askern is a small former mining town on the northern fringe of Doncaster in South Yorkshire, with 19th- and 20th-century roots in coal and rail. For much of its history it centred on a colliery and a busy railway junction - remnants of that industrial past are still visible in the layout and some Victorian buildings - but the pits have closed and the local economy has since shifted towards light industry and commuting into Doncaster and the wider region.
One of the town’s notable features is Askern Lakes Country Park, a reclaimed landscape of lakes and green spaces created from former extraction sites and now valued for fishing, birdwatching and informal recreation. The town retains a strong local identity with community groups, sports clubs and small independent shops, and has seen steady regeneration efforts aimed at improving facilities and greenspace.
