Kirk Smeaton and Little Smeaton are two neighbouring villages in the Selby district of North Yorkshire, England, set close to the meanders of the River Went and within easy reach of market towns such as Pontefract and Selby. The settlements are small, rural and often referred to collectively as the Smeatons, occupying gently rolling agricultural land that gives them a peaceful, pastoral character.
Locally the villages retain a strong village feel with historic buildings, a parish church in the larger settlement and community activities centred on village halls and pubs; farming remains an important part of the economy while many residents commute to nearby towns. Historically the area was in the West Riding of Yorkshire until county reorganisation in the 1970s, and that mix of agricultural roots and quiet commuter life helps define their social and cultural identity today.
