Bradford Abbas is a small village and civil parish in rural Dorset, set in the lush, undulating countryside of the Blackmore Vale and lying within easy reach of Yeovil and Sherborne. Its name – literally a “broad ford” with the affix “Abbas” – records historic ownership by Sherborne Abbey and hints at a long settlement history framed by lanes, hedgerows and small fields.
Today the village retains a distinctly rural character, with agriculture (notably dairy and mixed farming) still shaping the landscape, while many residents commute to nearby market towns for work. Historic buildings, a medieval parish church with Norman fabric and a compact community life of local events and village groups give Bradford Abbas a quietly traditional Dorset feel.
