Chalk Valleys is a largely rural ward in Dorset characterised by the rolling chalk downland and steep, narrow combes that give the area its name. The landscape is a patchwork of pasture and arable fields, with chalk grassland remnants, hedgerows and occasional prehistoric earthworks and barrows that hint at a long history of human use; the terrain is popular with walkers and wildlife enthusiasts for its spring flowers and birdlife.
Local life is centred on small villages and hamlets, with an economy still rooted in agriculture but supported by tourism, small businesses and commuters travelling to nearby market towns. Community institutions such as village halls, parish churches and pubs remain important socially, while local groups often focus on conserving the distinctive chalk habitats and sustaining rural services.
