Portland is a compact ward covering much of the Isle of Portland off the coast of Dorset, linked to the mainland by the shingle ridge of Chesil Beach. Its rugged limestone cliffs and sweeping views towards the Jurassic Coast give it a distinctly maritime character, from the sheltered waters of Portland Harbour to the distinctive headland at Portland Bill.
Historically dominated by quarrying of Portland stone - famously used in buildings such as St Paul’s Cathedral - and by naval and harbour works, the ward today mixes active quarries, yacht marinas and a steady tourism trade; it also featured in the 2012 Olympic sailing events alongside Weymouth. A strong local identity, close-knit communities and ongoing conservation efforts reflect both its industrial heritage and its environmental significance.
