Tarrant Hinton is a small, quiet village and parish in Dorset, tucked into the chalk bowl of the Tarrant Valley. The landscape is classic downland and agricultural countryside, with chalk streams and meadows that support a variety of wildlife and give the area a distinctly rural character.
Historically a farming community with a compact core of traditional cottages and a parish church, the village is best known more widely as the site of the Great Dorset Steam Fair, an annual event that brings thousands of visitors and a burst of economic and social activity to an otherwise sleepy place. Day-to-day life remains that of a close‑knit rural community, shaped by agriculture, local history and occasional influxes of visitors.
