Newhaven sits on the south coast in the district of Lewes, East Sussex, where the mouth of the River Ouse meets the English Channel. The town occupies a wide, working harbour tucked beneath the chalk slopes of the South Downs, and has long been a coastal gateway - historically for fishing and a long‑established cross‑Channel ferry link with Dieppe - as well as a Victorian defensive site centred on Newhaven Fort.
Today the port still shapes local life: commercial shipping, fishing, lifeboat operations and support for offshore wind work alongside small industries, a fishmarket and recent waterfront regeneration. There’s a strong local community identity and pockets of cultural activity around the harbour and fort, giving the town a mix of maritime heritage and practical modern enterprise.
