Great Bardfield lies in the district of Braintree, in north‑west Essex, England, set among rolling arable farmland. The village core is a conservation area of timber‑framed and Georgian houses centred on a medieval parish church, with a strong sense of rural character and many listed buildings that give a clear historic feel.
It is best known for the mid‑20th‑century artists' community - figures such as Edward Bawden and Eric Ravilious lived and worked here and the famous open‑house exhibitions of the 1950s brought the village national attention. Today Great Bardfield remains largely residential with farming and small local businesses, village events and a proud artistic legacy, while many residents commute to nearby towns or to London.
