The small rural village and civil parish of Birch lies in the Borough of Colchester in Essex, England. It occupies a patchwork of arable fields, hedged lanes and small wooded pockets typical of the Essex countryside, and feels distinctly quieter than the neighbouring urban areas while still being within easy reach of the town.
Locally there is a strong sense of community centred on a village hall, occasional fetes and the parish church, and a number of older, often listed, houses hint at the area's long history. The local economy remains rooted in agriculture and small businesses, with many residents commuting into Colchester and nearby towns for work, which gives the parish a mixed character of farming hamlets and residential commuters.
