West Mersea sits at the western tip of Mersea Island on the sheltered waters of the Colne Estuary, within the borough of Colchester in Essex, England. It is low-lying with salt marshes, shingle beaches and a small working harbour, and the surrounding landscape includes Cudmore Grove country park; the area has a long maritime history with roots stretching back through medieval and Roman periods.
Today the town mixes a strong local community with a seasonal tourist trade: oysters and other shellfish remain a notable local product, while sailing, boating and regattas are central to village life. The centre has independent shops, cafes and a local museum, and the social scene is shaped by maritime clubs, community events and a blend of long-standing residents and holiday-makers.
